This Age That We Call Ours

Ms. Supriyad,

An interesting, thoughtful and quite thought-provoking blog!

A few quotes (which are quite commonly used on this topic) came to mind first, as I read your word...

"The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference (apathy)"...
and

"They came for the Communists, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Communist;
They came for the Socialists, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Socialist;
They came for the labor leaders, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a labor leader;
They came for the Jews, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Jew;
Then they came for me - And there was no one left to object
."
- Martin Niemoller, German Pastor

Having said that...I suppose all of us all of us as human beings feel limited in our powers, are selective about how we pick sides in "getting involved" in worthwhile causes/ fights to make a difference...Some situations so blantantly call for universal outrage on humantarian grounds, while others are more specific are deal with long histories and enough blame on both sides.

I do appreciate your call for shaking of apathy, being alert and watchful and perhaps do find causes of our interest (whatever it may be) and get involved. As humans we tend to be so selfish, self-absorbed and live in our worlds...even more disconnected than ever before- inspite of all the technology and methods of communication available today!

Kudos for reminding us about the basics of humanity and our individual efforts!
best,
Maria

Tamil Movies and Bottles of Blood

Sudha,

Interesting story/blog!

While one can say a lot of negative things perpetuated mass-media/tamil movie superstars worshipping/influence...I come from a different perspective in this matter having worked in public hospitals in TN...I think it is a good thing- whenver there is an increase in blood donations (for whatever reason)....In the West, there are a lot of Health-Awareness campaigns/good social causes which are also promoted explicitly by movie/sports superstars.

*I also think...inspite of "all the mass hype" in the end..movies with superstar like MGR and Rajini...apart from all the superficial/artificial entertainment attraction- they include and  emphasize good value-messages...respect for women,  telling the truth, love for mother/country, respect for elders, don't promote drinking/promiscuity etc...the basic common sense values...it is better movies with simply glorifying of violence/action movies...war mongering etc- without any value messages.

*Alcoholism is on the rise (alarming among Indian communities- especially women)..I wish we would include some awareness/public health messages- in mass-media movies today.

best,
Maria

(mainly tamil) Indian names are going extinct..

Mr. S,

I like the name Karuppan too....speaking of dog names...true story....we had a little fully black terrier and named him "Karuppa" (since we live in a mixed neighborhood with lots of Black Americans- did not want to call him Black/Blackie etc..) everyone loved him...and it was fun to hear all the Americans call him Kar-ppa!:)  We had to explain that in our native language it meant black...and they loved it!

To tell ourselves that Muthukaruppan can never grow up to be a suave, "successful" young man is like killing our ego and blindly following others without rhyme or reason. It suggests a lack of pride inside us and gives us away weak people no matter how much we try to cover it up.

________

Mr. Subramani,

Well, as someone who has lived in the west for a long time.. I agree with you...but, I am not angry or upset...simply amused and feel sorry for the people who seem to name their children...with "fad names"!

Many of these names...have no meaning/character (in the sense of meaning), are silly and no originality!

*If one wants to be "fashionable/imitate the west"...at least be original and interesting (for goodness sakes!!) Name them Tiger, Venus, Apple, Valentina...something catchy!

*I can't wait for our Sen. Barack Obama to become the next President of US...if nothing else he will make "ethnic names" cool and sophisticated!

And in the west..."classic names rule"...Emily, Michael, Mary, Smith, John...will never go out of style!

best,
Maria

May I Become The Mother Of Two Daughters

Hello Julia,

Yes, you may:-)

That is some dream..adorable...the twins I dream these days are..well, never mind (don't want to ruin my serious and saintly image here:-)

Seriously,....you and your partner will be loving and nurturing mothers...(whoever these lucky daughters are...real, fictionary, figure of speech etc!)

*As you know- long distance relationships have their challenges (and have their advantages too!)

Good luck lady:)

The Journey

The world knew him the same person as I did. Without masks. I wish I could be more like him, but then those species aren’t there anymore.

Vivek,

A well-kept promise!
And a moving tribute...I tried to stay from the blogs...but, could not resist...and glad I gave in:)

best,
Maria

Be the change

Nargis,

Even more amazing is how the bride's mother has not changed one bit over the years and looks pretty like a bride:-)

Seems like a wonderful and blessed season in your lives.

Best wishes to couple and to the extended families.
